The Mission is renowned for its stunning architecture, which reflects traditional Spanish colonial design like the Great Stone Church, Constructed between 1797 and 1806, the Great Stone Church was an impressive structure meant to be the largest and most magnificent in the California mission chain. Unfortunately, it was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1812 and now stands as a poignant ruin, with its bell tower still intact.

The Serra Chapel is the only remaining church where Father Serra is known to have celebrated Mass. It is the oldest building in California still in use and features beautiful religious artwork and artifacts.

The mission complex includes several adobe buildings, which housed the missionaries, soldiers, and Native American converts. These buildings, with their thick walls and red tile roofs, exemplify the durability and simplicity of early Spanish colonial architecture.

The mission’s arcaded corridors and courtyards are adorned with beautiful gardens, fountains, and historic artifacts. The lush gardens feature a variety of plants, including roses, cacti, and native species, offering a serene environment for visitors.

It’s not only a historical site but a living museum that offers a variety of cultural and educational activities and guided tours. You can grab a little speaker that guides you through your visit right where you pay for your ticket at the entrance.

Throughout the year, the mission hosts various events and festivals, such as the annual Return of the Swallows celebration in March, which marks the arrival of the swallows from their wintering grounds in Argentina. This event includes live music, traditional foods, and cultural demonstrations.

The mission’s museum features a range of exhibits showcasing historical artifacts, religious art, and interpretive displays about the life and times of the mission’s inhabitants.

Significant efforts have been made to preserve and restore this unique Landmark. The mission’s caretakers and preservationists have worked diligently to maintain its structures, gardens, and artifacts, ensuring that this historic site remains a vibrant center of cultural heritage as it’s always been.
